A new SeasoN in The GArden

Spring couldn’t come soon enough after what has felt like a never-ending winter! As the outside world begins to wake up and prepare for what’s next, follow our top tips to get your garden ready for a new season.

Get your borders ready

Prepare your borders for spring by spending some time digging out those pesky weeds! Get on top of them now to save you a world of trouble later in the year.If you find perennial weeds ensure you dig up all the root too! After you’ve weeded the bed be sure to give the area a good mulch with compost or well-rotted manure. This will give your beds and borders some extra nutrients for all the new plants you’ll be enjoying over the spring and summer.

Look after your lawn

It’s time to start cutting the grass again to get your lawn looking great. For the first mow of the season, you should adjust your mower to have the cutting height at its highest setting. Follow our blog with lots of top tips here and don’t forget to give your grass a spring feed too!

Get more plants for free

If you find you’ve got some perennial plants that have gotten a bit too big for their boots, now is a great time to lift and divide them. You’ll be able to get your plant back to a manageable size and get more plants out of it for free! Now you’ve begun your mowing for the year you can save the clippings from your lawn and use these to benefit the wildlife. Let the clippings dry out and pile them in a dry corner of your garden. Slow worms might find the area a great place to nest or a queen bumblebee could start a colony – exciting stuff!

  • Gently lift plants with a garden fork
  • Shake excess soil off to show the plants roots
  • Divide the plant! Some plants can be gently pulled apart (by hand, or using two forks), while others may require a knife or spade
  • Plant as soon as possible and water in well

Sow hardy annuals

You can sow most hardy annuals outside where they are to flower (check the instructions on the packet). Guarantee growing success by preparing the seedbed. Weed the area where you plan to sow your seeds, use a rake to level the surface and add water to the area before sowing. Making the soil moist now will stop any disturbance of the seeds when watering.

Some of our favourite hardy annuals include:

  • Conflower
  • Cosmos
  • Nigella
  • Sunflower
  • Ammi Majus

We hope you enjoy completing these jobs this spring and we hope you turn your outdoor space into a happy one! Remember to get in touch with us if you’d like advice and help maintaining your garden.
